This task is usually handled by one or more programmers. They make prototypes as a means of testing ideas, which most of them never make it into the final game. They also incorporate new features demanded by the game designers to fix any bugs presented in the development process. A lot of programming is needed to customize almost every game.

When a game ships, the maintenance phase for the game begins. Games developed in the past had no form of maintenance and the shipped game would forever house many bugs when released. This was most common for consoles for that they all had identical or near identical hardware, making incompatibility, the cause of bugs, a non-issue. In this case, the maintenance phase would only occur during a port, sequel, or enhanced remake that reuses a large portion of the engine and assets.
